From Wildlife Conservation Society:
The proposed New York City budget slashes funding for WCS’ Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium by nearly 49 percent and could potentially force devastating program cuts and layoffs.
The Bronx Zoo and NY Aquarium are THE conservation education source for millions of NY area visitors. The latest budget cuts are 10 TIMES the cuts of a few years ago, when the Zoo closed several exhibits and laid off 15% of staff. While some cuts in these tough economic times are unavoidable, the latest round is simply unacceptable.
These budget cuts will hurt not only the 4 million people who visit WCS’ living museums each year, but also the thousands of community members that work here and the local businesses that benefit from the influx of visitors to their area.
Help us make sure City Hall gets the message: New Yorkers love their Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium and don’t want their budgets slashed.
