EAST ORANGE — The boil water advisory in East Orange due to the detection of E. coli bacteria in water samples has been lifted today for the entire city, officials said.
The contaminated water came from a sampling station on Dodd Street, according to Harry Mansmann, executive director of the East Orange Water Commission. The city's main water supply was never at risk, he said.
"We believed it was never a health issue," Mansmann said.
However as a precaution, the city is sanitizing all 14 of its sample stations with chlorine twice, checking for any leaking seals and improving maintenance, he said.
On Monday, officials lifted the advisory to boil all water for consumption for about 85 percent of the city. Parts of the city have been on alert since last Friday.
The water table in the northwest corner of East Orange was higher than normal due to heavy rainfall last month and that may have contributed to the E. coli bacteria contamination at the Dodd Street sample station, according to Mansmann.
